Barcelona was dealt a big whack to their chances of winning La Liga thanks to a 0-0 draw against Atlético Madrid on Saturday. In a game they needed to win the Blaugrana played not to lose. And despite developing the best chances of the game they didn’t do nearly sufficient to earn three points in what was a truly miserable performance.

FIRST HALF OF THE GAME

Atlético was the better squad in the first half, but the game was not very promising to watch at all. There was no flow to it and there was always a blockage for something, either injury or foul. Barça was really terrible with their passing and Atlético was always tricky when they got the ball back, and that was the pattern for the entire duration.

There were two great chances in the half, one for both the team. Initially, it was Hermoso who was released down the left and found Correa with a cross inside the box for it seemed like an easy goal, but Lenglet made a remarkable tackle to stop the Argentine.

The other possibility came on an absurd run by Lionel Messi, who turned back the clock and held the ball 40 yards while dribbling past everyone’s insight. And his shot was fated for the back of the net before a brilliant save by Oblak.

At halftime, a poor game of football was goalless with Atleti the better side, and Barcelona needed to step up their game to win the second half.

SECOND HALF

The beginning of the second half was more of the same, with Atlético in total control while Barcelona  played like they didn’t know this was a must-win game. It was only in the ultimate 30 minutes that the Blaugrana commenced to play with more urgency, but that’s when they ran into Jan Oblak, who made significant saves throughout the last half-hour.

The absolute best chance of the game came with five minutes to go when Jordi Alba splashed a terrific cross to find Ousmane Dembélé all alone for a free header inside the six-yard box. But the Frenchman led the way the ball over the bar and wasted a golden chance.

There was a free-kick in the 90th minute that Lionel Messi just missed, with the ball going agonizingly wide of the top nook. The last whistle came, and Barcelona season is almost over halting a miracle.

For a game this huge, it was a pathetic exhibit from a team that played not to lose. The fans are disappointed with the performance today by Barcelona.

Barcelona – hopes not yet ended

Barca’s title probabilities are dangling by a thread but they’re not deceased. Not yet anyway. Atletico and Madrid to either lose one game or draw two of their last three if they wanted to be in the game and to win the title. It’s unlikely, but it’s not impossible.

Negatives

In drawing with Atletico, Barca renounced their head-to-head record against Diego Simeone’s side this season. Which is the tiebreaker in the incident two sides end the campaign on equal points. That implies Barca will have to get more points than both Atletico and Madrid to complete above them, This could be key in such a battle the or top spot.

Barcelona’s first half was particularly bad, perhaps impacted by a head injury to Sergio Busquets He was sent to the hospital after a clash of heads with Stefan Savic. They were cut open far too easily, accepting a slew of chances, and, one moment of Messi’s brilliance aside. Created trifle fitting of a side fighting to win the champions league.
