The HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) is reeling now that the show is canceled and Tom Cruise, as a sign of protest, has literally returned his three Golden Globe Awards to the Los Angeles HFPA headquarters.
On Monday, a sudden, dramatic turn was taken by the long-brewing scandal around the HFPA when NBC stunned by the announcement that the network will not air the 2022 Golden Globes Awards. It is a right for which every year, NBC pays $60 million.
The network said that the rate of change that was proposed by the HFPA board in light of criticism over the lack of diversity of the organization was not fast enough to warrant a show next year. There is not one Black member among the 87 members of HFPA.
The network statement said that change of this magnitude takes work and time and they strongly feel that the HFPA needs time to do it right.
WHAT LED TO ALL THIS?
Even by its own hosts, the Golden Globes has long been the source of jokes and criticisms. After a February Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that the HFPA’s secretive voting group did not include one Black member, the turmoil of this year boiled into a Globes disaster. Prior to the critically-mixed Netflix show to have two shocking Globe nominations, Times revelations further included some members taking a Paris hotel stay paid for by the creators of “Emily in Paris.”
Amid mounting criticism, the HFPA board vowed to change and laid out a broad reform plan on May 3 to admit 20 new members in 2021 with a specific focus on recruiting Black members and in the next 18 months, increasing the membership by 50%.
WERE THE GOLDEN GLOBE TROPHIES REALLY RETURNED BY TOM CRUISE?
On Monday, Tom Cruise has his three Golden Globe trophies returned to the HFPA headquarters. Those awards were won by Tom Cruise for his best actor role in Jerry Maguire and Born on the Fourth of July and one supporting actor award for Magnolia. Clayton Davis, awards editor for Variety says that it was a power move for the hugely influential Hollywood actor.
Davis says that from everything that happened that day, the actions of Tom Cruise were the most meaningful. It was so telling that Tom Cruise who has no BAFTA, no Oscar, no SAG awards decided that his three Golden Globes Awards needed a return label. It was so important because it cannot be only Latinos and Blacks speaking out about what was happening in Hollywood.
IN 2022, WILL WE HAVE GOLDEN GLOBES AWARDS?
A statement from HFPA was followed by the announcement of NBC with a detailed timetable for change where they said that regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes, the top priority of their organization was implementing transformational changes as quickly and as thoughtfully as possible.
Do not count on an untelevised Golden Globes ceremony in 2022, or another network picking up the radioactive awards program even though the HFPA has not commented specifically.
It has been predicted by Chris Beachum, managing editor for the awards website GoldDerby.com that programs such as SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards could grab the kick-off awards spot which the globes had enjoyed in the past years.
Beachum says that something needs to open awards season and he could see one of those shows seizing the opportunity.
Davis said that whether people want to admit it or not, the Golden Globes had a direct effect on the entire awards season. To make people start caring about the award movies, even Oscars need the Golden Globes. For NBC, money is a driving factor.
