WHO global pact: On Wednesday (Dec 1), the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to launch negotiations. It is on an international treaty to prevent and control future pandemics at a juncture when the world is getting ready to fight against the new Omicron variant of coronavirus.

Such a pact to fortify estimates against pandemics is determined to be ready in May 2024, enclosing topics from genome sequencing and data sharing of emerging viruses to the proper distribution of vaccines and drugs concluded from research.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the meeting of health minister that the adoption of the WHO global pact is a cause for celebration and a cause for hope that we all need.

He said, calling for continued cooperation that there is still a long way ahead. There are still discrepancies of opinion about what a new treaty could or should contain. Moreover, countries should abide by the WHO’s 2005 International Health Regulations.

The determination, entitled “The World Together”, was approved by the agreement at a special assembly of the 194 countries that are members of the UN health body, bringing acknowledgment at the end of a 3-day meeting.

Australia’s ambassador Sally Mansfield, who co-chaired the working group said the text before they are the product of substantial discussions, of fair compromises and exchanges

Diplomats said the European Union (EU) had shoved for WHO global pact on an international legally crucial treaty, along with approximately 70 countries, but the United States, and India, Brazil were among those reluctant to perpetrate WHO global pact.

On Wednesday, Ambassador Lotte Knudsen, head of the EU delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, said in a statement that they call for an enterprising process in developing this pact – let us all ascertain our multilateral obligation and engagement towards a binding method.

The United States greeted the decision telling in a statement that this critical step exemplifies our collective commitment to work together to boost health security and to make the global health system powerful and more responsive.

The WHO tells China has still not discussed some of its early information that might assist identify the lineage of the virus.

It said in resemblance to the negotiations on an epidemic instrument, the United States committed to functioning with other members on targeted modifications to the 2005 International Health Regulations.
