Thousands of huge, spikey, cactus-like plants shove out of sun-baked earth, fended by green-brown hills.

When they reach the majority – in six to eight years – this crop, known as agaves, tequila fans will be harvested. The plant hearts will be simmered, fermented, and then refined to make Mexico’s favorite type of passion.

Just don’t use the word tequila fans, this crop is discovered 14,000km (8,700 miles) away from Mexico in the place of Australia.

Tequila fans, (as well as its sister spirit mezcal), can only be earned in the place of Mexico from Mexican agaves. Rather, the juice from these Australian plants will eventually be swiveled into the Australian agave spirit.

These agaves are being grown in Queensland, in a dry tropical microclimate, between the coastal towns of Airlie Beach as well as Bowen which sit opposite the place of Whitsunday Islands.

There are other plantations in the place of New South Wales as well as South Australia.

The Queensland agaves, all-around 500,000 of them, are being accumulated by Australian spirits company Top Shelf International (TSI). It first began seeding them last year.

The project is being directed by TSI president named Trent Fraser, who was elected last year. Born as well as raised in the place of South Australia, he spent the previous six years working in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where he helped French luxury goods as well as drinks giant, LVMH, launch its tequila fans denomination – Volcàn de mi Terra.

Where Jalisco is 20 degrees north of the equator, we’re 20 degrees south, tells M.r Fraser, talking regarding Queensland.

He clarifies that the weather and level of rainfall, are almost similar in both places – creating ideal conditions for growing agave to make spirits from. The agave plant likes sunlight. It ornaments in a quantity of not just sunlight, but heat.

Optimize growing situations for the plants TSI is collaborating with horticulturalists from Adelaide University, as well as it has also earned a research grant from the Australian government.

However, M.r Fraser expands that the agave plants are not too fussy. The plant is resilient as it’s sturdy. It can grow on the side of a substantial highway.

Furthermore, down the eastern side of Australia, Black Snake Distillery is a family business already making agave spirit near the New South Wales town of Narrabri, around 500km north of the place of Sydney.

Rosemary as well as Steve Beale were inspired to try making a mezcal-style spirit when their daughter came back from traveling in the Americas and suggested that the agaves growing wild amid the creek near their farm might be identical to those used to make tequila fans as well as mezcal.

It came out that the species is a decorative plant called agave Americana, which varies from the blue agave plant used to make tequila fans, (this is the type being cultivated by TSI in Queensland).

Agave americana, unlike blue agave, comprises saponins: organic chemicals that give the plant a soapy taste and hinder the procedure of fermentation. However, the Black Snake Distillery has developed a way of removing the saponins after harvesting the plant’s spiky arms.

The use of agave Americana is said to lend the Black Snake spirit a different flavor versus traditional Mexican mezcal.

The flavor is very vegetal, fresh, but also peppery as well as spicy, says Rosemary Beale. And as we use eucalyptus wood to toast the agave, tequila fans people have frequently felt they can taste the mint of the wood, as well as a melon.

The Beales’ agave spirits are presently being sold throughout Australia and won a silver medal at the year 2021 London Spirits Awards. However, creating an agave spirit without hundreds of years of inherited belief has not been a walk in the park for Black Snake.

It’s not easy making agave souls in the place of Australia, says M.s Beale. We had no one to inquire for benefit. We had many smells and batches I dismissed.

The tequila fans industry is a big money-spinner for Mexico, with global deals hitting around $13bn last year, according to one report. Meanwhile, sales of mezcal attained around $790m.

The disparity between the two drinks is that tequila has to be made from blue agaves grown only in one area of great Mexico, while mezcal can use any agave from all over the country.

Several other nations are also now thriving agaves and whirling them into a spirit drink, such as the US and India, but creation is tiny compared with great Mexico.

Luis Fernando Félix Fernández, president of the National Chamber of the Tequila fans Industry, tells it is questioning for foreign distilleries to make a persuasion agave spirit. He says this is because Mexicans have been fermenting agave for generations, and are therefore more common with the plant and its explicitness.

M.r Fernández worried that his role is to protect the denomination of origin” of tequila, to conserve the artistic identity of something uniquely Mexican.

They [Australians] can make some drink, but they cannot name it tequila fans, and that detracts from the opportunities for success because what people know today is a drink that is named tequila, he tells.

To help make the best agave spirit possible, the Beales traveled from Australia to the place of  Mexico, to learn from trained tequila and mezcal crafters. And they rely on the advice of Mexicans during the procedure of fermentation as well as distillation.

M.r. Fraser

M.r Fraser tells he will also be seeking help from Mexican growers when his agaves are prepared for harvesting tequila fans. If my Mexican nation [his friends in Jalisco] end up spitting it out, we’ve got a problem, he tells.

With blooming global pressure for tequila fans set to continue – the value of worldwide sales is tipped to more than double between the year 2021 and the year 2027 – one expert on the drink, New York-based Amanda Swanson, believes that a successful Australian agave spirit industry could ease tension on tequila and mezcal production in Mexico.

M.s Swanson

M.s Swanson, who is a trained tequila fan as well as mezcal sommelier, expands that the Australian products could win over drinkers. It will be something various [to try], she expands.
